Writers' Salon

A weekly space to share, listen, and keep writing.

Every Thursday evening, Retro & Co Bookstore hosts a Writers’ Salon — an intimate gathering where writers share works-in-progress with a listening audience. This is not a stage for polished readings. It’s a space for stories still taking shape, poems in rough form, and ideas that need air.

We created the Salon because writing can be lonely — and sometimes, all it takes to keep going is knowing someone is listening.

Each session invites 2 - 4 writers to share something they’re working on — a short excerpt, a scene, a chapter, a poem. After the reading, we open up space for gentle feedback, encouragement, or questions. We also welcome writers who simply want to come, sip something warm, and soak up the atmosphere.

Expect lo-fi playlists, soft lights, and the unmistakable comfort of being in the company of words.

📸 Capturing the Process

We document each session through photography and videography (with your consent) — helping storytellers build visibility and archives of their journey. Highlights may be featured on our social channels.

We are honored to launch the Writers’ Salon with a powerful celebration of literary legacy. Join us for a special evening featuring a performance reading of Mũrogi wa Kagogo by acclaimed performer and writer Ogutu Muraya, followed by a conversation on the influence and imagination of Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o.

This evening is both tribute and torch-passing — a poetic beginning to what we hope will become a cornerstone of Malindi’s literary culture.
